Today the Marine Aquarium Society of Victoria (MASOV) visited the Melbourne Aquarium for a behind the scenes tour. As the tour was full and we had done the same three years prior, Naomi and I decided to explore the main aquarium. I had a lot of fun testing my low-light photography to the limits, and was pretty happy with some of the photos I got. It helped that I took a couple of hundred photo to choose from!

Very cool pictures. I love the colors of the jelly fish!!

Thank you! I think the jelly fish colours were mostly from the lighting that the Aquarium had in the display tanks, but they looked very cool :)
Daria Sukhanovska
Stunning! Simply stunning. I just love all of them. Did you take tripod with you? I found it so difficult to photo things in aquarium. And those jelly fish are just beautiful!

Really great images here, Neil. I love aquariums, but the closest one is about 15 hours away. Thanks for sharing these, they’re all amazing!

Daria, thanks so much for your kind words, I’m glad you liked them. There was no tripod used. Most photos were taken hand held at 1/15th-1/50th with a 50mm f1.8 at ISO 800-1600. It was a real challenge, but worth it.
Thanks Cody! That’s quite a hike! I hope my photos can give you some vicarious enjoyment :)
Trish
Gorgeous photos Neil, just loved the vibrant colours.
Anthea
I saw some of your Flickr photos before this post and wanted to say they were inspiring. I’m going to have to get to get myself to the Sydney Aquarium. These are stunning!

Thanks a lot Trish and Anthea! Isn’t nature just spectacular? When you do get the aquarium Anthea, make sure you take some photos, post them to your blog and link to it from a reply to this post! I’d love to see them, and I’m sure the others who liked this post would as well!

Hey Neil, great pictures! I visited the aquarium in November 08 and am just getting a chance to write a review now! (i’ve been busy) the problem is I did not bring my SLR camera with me so I did not really get any good shots. Hope you don’t mind but I used a few of yours (they were the best on the internet!!) I gave you credit of course on my blog, I hate it when people steal pictures. Anyways thought I would let you know, here is my post Melbourne Aquarium Review
