Dye in the Milk – P365 Jan11
I tried an experiment today. I tried to replicate this.
It was an undeniable failure, unfortunately. Nothing behaved as it was supposed to. So instead I just played around with the milk and dye. These were the results.
Here’s how I did it:
- Fill a medium sized flat round dish with just enough milk to cover the bottom
- Put only a couple of drops of food dye in the milk
- Swish it around just a little with a toothpick
The camera and light settings were as follows:
- Canon 350D on tripod
- 1/40thsec @ f11 ISO200
- 580EX @ 1/8th Camera top left through white umbrella
If you give it a go, be sure to show me how it goes!

The experiment might not have gone quite as you expected, but these images are brilliant! Very psychedelic desktop backgrounds.
There are some very interesting patterns created with this process. I would image that some of these image could be used as either overlay or distortion layer for an abstract iamge.

Anthea – Thank you, I was very happy with the results. They are pretty 60’s cool aren’t they?
MY Camera World – One of the things I love most about nature is how the patterns you see are repeated all over the universe on all scales. Some of the patterns in these photos can be seen in the clouds of Jupiter and in satelite photos of the Mississippi. The textures would be useful to emulate natural processes in a number of ways I’m sure.
