This weekend we were invited by Anna, to stay with her, her boyfriend and two of their friends at a family member’s beach house near Somers. We had a fantastic time, and really enjoyed ourselves. Here are some photos I took there today.

First up was a leisurely morning at the Red Hill market, one of the biggest in the state. The girls had a teriffic time. Naomi ended up with several of the soaps seen above.

The market is held around the perimeter of the local sports oval, where today the Red Hill junior cricket team were playing.

After the market, a visit to the beach was called for, to make the most of the beautiful weather. I brought along my kite and we had a great time taking turns having a fly.

We ate a delicious barbeque dinner together outside in the balmy evening, before retreating from the flies to play a couple of games of Kelly Pool, AKA Assassin.

After the others retired to their beds for the night, I made the most of the dark country night skies to take some astrophotos. Both of the images you see above are the result of multiple exposures stacked together to maximise the light and minimise the noise.
The first photo is an all-sky fisheye photo, with the beach house in the foreground, light painted with a small torch. The second photo is of the Large Magelanic Cloud, the largest and brightest galaxy visible in the night sky, and our closest galactic neighbour in space. More information can be seen in the Flickr photo descriptions:

Tomorrow I will post photos from our second day at Somers.

Today was a VERY busy day for photography! First we had a behind the scenes tour of Melbourne Museum’s ichthyology (fish) collection with the Marine Aquarium Society, then Naomi and I went up to the country to visit a friend where I spent ages photographing flowers in her garden, finally I stayed up late to catch some stars.

P365 Oct18: 3D laser trace of teapot

Instructions for how to see the 3D effect can be read here.
With a white teapot on an infinity sweep background, I set the camera with Loreo3D lens to keep the shutter open for several seconds. Then from an oblique angle, I drew lines over the teapot with the laser in various shapes and patterns. It was my hope that the lines would reveal the shape of the teapot when seen in 3D, and I think the effect works fairly well. It’s not as contrasty as I would have liked, as the white surfaces scattered the laser light very well so there is a lot of diffuse light illuminating the teapot as well, rather than just the laser lines.

I thought tonight I’d experiment with combining two different kinds of photos that I’ve been trying in the past. Light painting and 3D. Read this post for instructions on how to see the images in 3D. I’m pretty happy with the results! I’ll have to experiment with this further :)
If you’re visiting from Digg or Stumbleupon, welcome! For those that are interested, you can see more of my 3D photos in the 3D category, more of my Light Painting pics in its category, and if you’re new to stereo photos, here’s how to see them.
If you like my work, please subscribe to my blog at the top right! I make regular posts with photographic experiments, and I’m planning to write more tutorials in the near future.

Note to self: ALWAYS make sure the camera batteries are charged before I leave the house with the camera… :( More than once recently I’ve run out of battrey only to find the spare flat or missing. This is a most depressing experience for a photographer.
This pic was one of only a handful I managed to take before the battery died. The occasion was a farewell dinner for one of Naomi's workmates, and I was showing people how light painting was done. At least it's a pic worthy of sharing on the blog :)
