While we were shooting on the beach, a wedding party was going on up at All Smiles Sorrento Ocean Beach. Late in the night a large group came down to the beach and launched a series of paper lanterns out into the ocean. The scene was just perfect and I quickly grabbed my camera and tripod, guessed the settings and started taking pics. It was so dark there in person that I'm not even sure they saw me take the pics! After I'd spent about 10 minutes getting photos, as they were finishing up, I took my camera over and asked the guests who I could speak to about the photos. Soon I was surrounded by excited and slightly tipsy people who all loved seeing the shots on the back of the camera. The bride even gave me a hug and kiss! I left my business card with the best man and told them to get in touch with me for copies. The lesson of this story is always be ready to quickly change gears to take advantage of great photo opportunities that appear when you least expect them! That, and always keep some business cards on hand :)

I love my fisheye lens! I was assisted on the shoot by Miller, while his mum Kerry and Naomi looked on. Naomi reminded me of a photo I took many years ago and suggested it would work for a photo of Miller. I was only too happy to oblige! More experience, a better camera and darker skies made for a much better photo this time around in my opinion! [caption id="attachment_2930" align="aligncenter" width="640"]

Naomi also wanted a photo of herself and Kerry enjoying the stars where they were sitting on the beach. They had such a great time that night - as did we all - listening to the music from the wedding, admiring the stars from the dark Sorrento sky and getting creative with the camera. I hope we can do it again soon!

Fireworks Photography Tips
- Most fireworks displays happen in the city, and having a foreground element in your fireworks photos really adds to them, so try to include another element in the composition with the fireworks.
- Use a tripod, as the exposures will be several seconds long.
- Use a two second timer, or even better a cable release. You can trigger by hand but you may get some wobbles in the light trails. A 10 second timer will take too much time so use your finger if you don't have a cable release or two second option.
- Use auto focus on distant city lights, then swap to manual focus so your camera doesn't hunt around for focus costing you valuable seconds.
- The aperture will determine how bright the fireworks appear, the shutter speed how many fireworks appear in the shot.
- You don't want to burn out the colour in the fire works, so I suggest an aperture of between f8 and f16.
- Leaving the shutter open too long can cause there to be too many fireworks in the shot, making it possibly appear too busy and messy. I suggest starting with 10sec.
- Adjust your ISO around these values to get a good exposure for your foreground element. A lower ISO is better for less noise however. Probably between 100ISO and 400ISO.
- During the display you can try changing your settings for effect.
- As the display goes on, you get more smoke in the scene, so your best shots will probably be the early ones. Feel free to experiment later.
- If you have time and feel up to it, try zooming in with a longer lens to fill the frame with the fireworks. This can look very different.

If you have seen Darren's entry in the View From Below project, you'll understand that I was keen for him to show me the location where he took his shot. Despite some flash problems I had, I enjoyed shooting in this wonderfully textured, dark, grungy location.
