I think another great idea would be to do something with 'Getting the Angle just right' as in the post you made here Neil:
http://neil.creek.name/forum/index.php?topic=14.msg28#msg28
There could be some really interesting and amusing photos from taking shots like the ones seen on the link you posted: http://damncoolpics.blogspot.com/2008/10/pictures-taken-at-just-right-angle.html I got a good laugh looking at some of them and found them to be inspirational too.  Smiley

As for your idea of photographing single letters, I was wondering ... are you meaning to take photos of actual letters from signs etc or photo's which depict a letter? For example here are two of my pics I have called the letter 'O' and 'Q':

<ahref="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mystic-venus/2638705736/">

<ahref="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mystic-venus/2746255043/">

PS .. For some reason I'm still having trouble posting photos linked from my flickr ... obviously I'm putting in an extra space or something ?
4  General Category / Techniques, Tips and Technology / Re: Do you leave your camera strap attached? on: November 15, 2008, 02:46:58 PM
When I received my new Canon a few months ago, one of the first things I did was put the strap on and haven't taken it off since. Just like as B Wardy I was also worried about dropping it ... it was like having a new born baby and I still treat it as such.

I recall it took me about 10 to 15 minutes to get the strap on ... underlooping it back into the same little area and remember thinking to myself 'man ... what a pain in the #%**' and decided then and there ... this strap will be staying on forever.

I tend to wear it like a great big permanent necklace now, hanging it around my neck whenever I'm out and about .. even when I'm in the car and especially when I'm out in our garden.

I don't find it to be too much of a hassle while I'm using the tripod but would probably take them off if it were just a case of one click and their off or on.

Very cool indeed .... thanks for the link Neil.

They are quite inspiring too!
6  General Category / General Discussion / Funny 4 The Day ~ #1 ~ How to give a pill to a pet on: November 10, 2008, 11:26:24 PM
Do you have a cat or a dog for a pet? I am more partial to dogs as pets but I have had a few cats during my life and can easily relate to this very funny take on how to give your pet a pill.

CAT:

1)Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As the cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and vigorously rub cat's throat.

7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make a note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8 ) Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9) Check label to make sure pill is not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10) Retrieve cat from neighbour's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of your last tetanus jab. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12) Ring fire brigade to retrieve the f---#-g cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13) Tie the little b****#d's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining room table, find heavy duty Pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14) Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15) Arrange for RSPCA (Animal Welfare) to collect mutant cat from hell and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

DOG: Wrap pill in bacon, cheese or peanut butter. Make him beg.  Grin

8  General Category / Techniques, Tips and Technology / Re: What is your favourite piece of photographic gear? on: November 09, 2008, 02:01:46 PM
I'm still building up my photography kit. I have my new Canon Rebel XTi and still learning how to use it. For my recent birthday Peter bought me a Micnova Wireless Shutter ... it has range up to 100m without obstacles. I have just started playing around with it and hoping to get some really cool photos while using it soon. Smiley
9  General Category / Discuss Blog Posts / Re: What do you think of the Photo5 competition finalists? on: November 09, 2008, 01:45:28 PM
Interesting selection of finalists. I liked more of the photos in the Amateur section than what was selected as finalists in the Professional group.

I have to say it has boggled me as to what the judges saw in some of them ... I'm sure there would have been many more photos submitted which were more interesting and with more creative compositions than most of the finalists chosen.

I really loved your angel submission and also your candle one 'the dark side' and it's a shame you didn't make the cut. There is always next year though.  I wasn't able to get my entries in this time round so look forward to the next one to enter into myself.
10  General Category / General Discussion / How do I post a photo? on: November 07, 2008, 02:28:18 PM
I tried to post a photo from my flickr in the games section http://neil.creek.name/forum/index.php?topic=5.msg20#msg20 and it didn't work.
I'm not too sure how to post a photo in a forum .... is it different from how we post in flickr?

Any advice or suggestions from anyone would be great. Cheers Chrissy

Hi Neil

Looks great and I'm looking forward to participating here too.

I haven't been able to do anything much online for the last month or so .. my pc is quite old ... has had lots of formats and bandaids for the last year but now it just constantly crashes and is taking it's last breaths as I type ... We have been saving our pennies for the last month and hopefully I'll be getting a new one today.
