Last weekend was the Supanova Pop Culture Expo for 2009 in Melbourne. This is a travelling cultural expo similar to Manifest, but run by a professional organisation and with a broader focus on pop culture, including science fiction, fantasy, comics and more. Supanova differs from Manifest in a number of ways , including the focus on international guests, speaking panels and perhaps a more commercial atmosphere, but with fewer events, cultural attractions and less of an emphasis on cosplay (making and wearing costumes of your favourite fictional characters). Cosplay, however, does seem to be becoming a more significant part of the expo, and it was the major event this year. Perhaps it is to be expected that the majority of cosplayers were dressed in anime costumes, but it was a refreshing change, for me, to see characters from many other genres represented.
Photographing the cosplay is the main focus of conventions, and as such most of my time at Supanova was spent waiting for the cosplay comp, reserving my seat, or shooting the cosplay competition. I had a brief look around the traders hall, and around the venue, but spent most of my time in the main hall. One point of import is that Manifest will be moving to the showgrounds as well for its tenth year, so I was interested to scout out the venue as well.
Below are a selection of my favourite photos from the event, specifically of cosplayers in the comp and elsewhere. In the past, readers have expressed an interest in seeing what the costumes are based on, so I have included below each photo, where applicable, an image of the character being cosplayed. I hope this will deepen your appreciation for the hard work and dedication that these wonderfully talented people put into their costumes! At the bottom of this post you will find a couple of videos and a link to my full gallery of more than 270 photographs from the event. I hope you enjoy them!

It’s time to kick my photo business up a gear, and I have a special limited offer for all of my portrait and costume photo clients: If you refer any paying clients to me for either a portrait or costume photo session, then you will get a one hour portrait or costume photo session free!

If you refer a friend for a paid photo shoot, you’re eligible for a free photo shoot. Your friend needs to tell me who referred them, by giving me your contact details. I’ll then get in touch with you to arrange your free photo shoot.

This offer doesn’t include wedding, commercial or any other kind of photography, just portrait and costume photography. The offer is strictly limited and can be withdrawn at any time if I get too busy to offer it any more. Once you’ve made a booking and referred someone to me, of course, your friend can claim the free shoot.
I am available to shoot anywhere near Melbourne, Victoria, however travel costs may be incurred depending on your location.
Sailor Moon Photo Shoot with Jodie

A Sailor Moon costume photoshoot was planned on the Manifest forums for quite a while, but everyone soon started dropping out. In the end, only Jodie was able to make it, but we were still keen to go ahead. Fortunately Jodie is a fantastic cosplayer and good friend, and together with Nakey (Mark) as another photographer, the three of us had a lot of fun shooting photos in a local park on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Jodie looked gorgeous, don’t you think?
The shoot was great fun, and we really enjoyed all the bemused, amused and amazed views from the others in the park of all ages. The childrens’ reactions were especially entertaining, and some of the parents were even overheard to say “I used to watch that show!”
The clear sky and time of day we were shooting resulted in very contrasty light, so most of the photos you see here were assisted by using off camera flash, in the strobist style. I’ve included exposure details and strobist information under each photo below.
Scroll to the bottom of the post, beneath the photos, to see links to my gallery of the full 100 photos from the shoot, as well has the photos that Nakey and I took on Jodie’s camera, linked to her gallery.

Manifest 2008 Photo Studio – Come and Camwhore!

The Melbourne Anime Festival, Manifest, is the biggest photo event of the year for me. I’ve been shooting Manifest in one form or another for seven years. Last year I took over 3000 photos, and had a great time. You can see all of the photos I have taken at Manifest in the last seven years in my gallery.
This year, however, is different. This year I’ll be doing it professionally.
You can read the details at the special page I’ve set up.
It’s been somewhat last minute – the Manifest committee contacted me fairly recently to suggest the idea – but I’m close to completing my preparations so I’m announcing the Manifest Photo Studio tonight! Anyone who is attending Manifest this year, please come by my photo studio to say hi and have your photo taken. Photo shoots are free, and you can purchase prints at a special convention price. I’ll be located in the foyer outside the main theatre (Copland Theatre) in the Eco/Com building. It’s right near where the cosplay comp will be held.
I’m taking all my studio gear, including my 3x6m white backdrop, four lights, reflectors, coloured gels etc. With this gear set up there, I should be able to get much more professional looking photos than have ever been available at Manifest before. Cosplayers and regular attendees are welcome to have a photo shoot, and my backdrop can accommodate groups of eight or maybe more!
Needless to say I’m going to absolutely flat-out this weekend, even more so since my lovely sales assistant Naomi is no longer able to attend. I’ve got a couple of friends hopefully able to come and assist, so I should be able to cope with the demand, whatever that ends up being!
This is very much an experiment. I have no idea if Manifest attendees will be interested in buying prints of photos, no matter how professional they look. Many attendees are young, or have spend all of their money on their costumes or on anime merchandise. I hope my photos look impressive enough that they think it’s worth handing over their money, rather than buying more Pocky :)
Although I’ll be very busy shooting at Manifest, and processing photos afterwards, I hope to take note of how it all goes, and learn as much as I can, not just to offer a better service next year, but also to have cool stuff to write about for you all here in the blog :)
If you want to attend Manifest, but haven’t bought a ticket yet, then you’d better get there early Friday or even earlier on Saturday! On the day registrations sell out VERY quickly! I hope to see some of you there!
