This morning, the July Top 100 Australian Blogs list was published, and Neil Creek – Photographer is listed for the first time ranked 77th! This list is generated using a formula (which I’ll discuss below) and assesses Australian blogs that have been found by the list maintainer, submitted by blog owners (as I did myself) or have been suggested by other users.
The top ranked Aussie blog is the Digital Photography School, maintained by Darren Rowse and contributed to by a number of authors, including myself. Congratulations Darren! While I don’t believe that this list is the be all and end all of accurate Australian blog metrics, the top twenty blogs listed are certainly twenty hugely successful blogs, and being listed here is a great honor.
A moderately thorough look through the list also suggests that mine is the second ranked photography blog in the country, and I am a contributor to number one! That’s a pretty good feeling. :)
You can read about the formula used to rank the blogs on the “About the Top 100 Australian Blogs” page, but essentially the calculation is based on Alexa toolbar, and Technorati rankings. I believe that the metrics chosen do bias the results to web sites of a technical nature, and I think the list would be improved by somehow factoring in the feed subscriber numbers.
If you would like to help me out and do what you can to maintain or improve my ranking on this list, there is two things you can do. First, install the Alexa toolbar. Visits to my site from users with this toolbar (which can be minimised to a tiny icon in the status bar at the bottom of your browser) count toward my blog’s Alexa rating. Second, if you write a blog, please link to my blog, either in a post or in a list of links to friends, like I have done in my footer. This will help my Technorati ranking.
It’s also a good idea to join Technorati and claim your blog anyway. In addition to helping me out with my Technorati rating, you will also get access to a bunch of useful tools on the Technorati site, including notification of whenever another blog links to you. If you have already joined Technorati, I’d really love a few more fans. :)
At the end of the day, even though it’s cool to be on the list, the important thing is that I continue to have fun and learn more about photography by writing my blog, as well as helping others to learn more and enjoy the hobby more and more.
Thanks to everyone for helping me to make it to the list!
