Rough as guts panorama of my desk

Tuesday, while at Mike’s place admiring his beautiful aquarium, I saw this cool photo collage he had on his wall, of a pretty seaside building made with many overlapping photos. I thought it was a very cool idea. Kind of like a rough panorama. Then yesterday browsing through one of the blogs I follow, I saw this post which reminded me I’d seen this kind of stuff online before.
Laurie linked to some of Heather Champ’s photos on Flickr as her inspiration, and these were so cool, that I just had to have a go myself.
It was late, the light was terrible, but I didn’t mind. I figured the rough, rushed look was part of what made these composites cool. So I grabbed my camera, stuck on the 50mm lens, set to f1.8 at 1/50th and ISO1600, and quickly and deliberately roughly took a couple dozen photos of my desk to stick together.
Flickr Tag Error: Call to display photo '2698357303' failed.
I couldn’t help myself but use the panorama stitching software to join them together. It made the alignment pretty simple, but it warped the photos to fit, as well as colour corrected and blended the photos. Normally you want this for a panorama, but the appeal of these photos is their inaccuracies.
Overall I’m happy with the result, but next time I’ll leave the camera on auto everything, including focus, and I’ll put them all together in photoshop, for that hand-made collage look.
Twelve Apostles print available

This week’s fine art photo print is a classic Australian scene, along the world famous Great Ocean Road along the Southern Victorian coast. The Twelve Apostles are a collection of gigantic rock pillars left standing after a process of erosion has pushed back the cliff face, leaving these monoliths standing free.
Naomi and I were actually taking this photo on assignment for the Australian touring company AAT Kings Tours. The twelve apostles (there are actually only seven standing, but only nine when they were named) are a top destination for the company’s tours, and they feature on the cover of many brochures. A couple of years ago, however, one of the larger and more obvious pillars collapsed, making all the photos in the catalogues obsolete. You can see the pile of rubble in the middle of the shot above. We were asked to go and shoot some new photos for AAT.
The photo they actually selected was a different one, taken in the midday sun, showing the vivid colours of the sea and sky. It was my first ever cover shot! A proud moment for me.
Personally, I much prefer this photo, with the golden sunset light and the dark, blue stormclouds in the background. If you would like to purchace a print of this photo, and have an iconic piece of Australia for yourself, you can do so at the Fine Art PhotoBlog. And while you’re there, be sure to check out the latest offerings from my talented comrades at the blog.

Hello! Finally I’ve managed to find a net cafe that will let me upload some photos. If you’re just here to look at the pretty pictures, you can see a selection of photos Nomi and I have taken so far at this link:

It’s been a good holiday in many ways, but rough in many others. I’ve been fighing a bad cold the whole time, although that’s almost gone now. But now I’ve caught some kind of extremely uncomfortable stomach bug. Foolishly, in the middle of the night last night, I drank a mouthful of untreated, bug infested bore water, rather than the filtered water. Doh… I was half asleep okay? I’m paying for it now though…
Anyway, aside from that, and the incredibly long drives, it’s been a great holiday so far. Lots of beautiful landscapes, billions of gorgeous wildflowers growing everywhere, adorable dolphins that swim right up to you at Monkey Mia. And now we’ve just arrived at Ningaloo, and soon we’ll be checking out the coral reef here. I don’t know how much I’ll be able to do, but I’m assured I’ll be feeling better in 24 hours.
I’m not really feeling up to typing much more now, so I’ll say goodbye. I might be feeling better soon, and make another post tomorrow. If not, you probably won’t hear from me again till we get home. If you have anything to say to this post or the pictures, please leave a comment below, as we won’t be checking email.
Seeyas!
