Tonight we had dinner with family at my sister’s. I was able to arrange an impromptu photo shoot to get up-to-date photos of some family, and first ever photos of my Uncle John and Aunt Bev.

Neil,
Love the three-dimensional quality of these portraits. How about some information about the lighting setup.

Hi Lowell, thanks for the complement.
It’s a pretty simple setup. A Canon 580EX on 1/4 power through a white umbrella camera left, high, and a Vivitar 285HV on 1/16th power, bare, camera right, coming from an angle back behind the subjects. Both flashes are fired via cheap Cactus wireless remotes. The subjects are about 1.5M in front of a yellow painted wall.
The left light illuminates the subjects with a nice soft light. The back light ads a kicker to their cheeks and give a bit of separation from the background and enhances the 3D look, as you commented.
