This is an experimental idea that came together better than I had hoped! I’ve previously experimented with time lapse, which I enjoyed, and this was an idea that came to me after I remembered having seen similar done some time ago. I wanted to put my own twist on it, however, by using the fisheye lens for an unusual perspective.
I put the camera on tripod in the back seat with one leg on the central console, and the laptop connected to the camera via usb on the back seat. Then with the camera snapping away, I just drove around some of the local streets for a few minutes. I’m very happy with the results and want to experiment more with this in the future.

After my first experiment with light painting, I have been very keen to try it again. A brief opportunity presented itself when friends Daz and Col visited. We'd had a full fun day, and they were about to head home when they let me drag them out into the street for a 10 minute light painting experiment.
With my flash mounted to camera right, and the exposure set to dimly illuminate the background, I gave them each a torch (Actually Colin used his own blue light) and tried to explain the effect I was wanting to achieve. Daz and Col are both musicians, so the music notes seemed appropriate!
Given the time we had I think the result is passable. I look forward to trying properly with planning, rehersal, and pleanty of time to shoot. Hopefully soon!

Nathan visited us again today, and again I had fun taking photos. We even tried some cool animated light painting, which you can see below:

This cool effect was inspired by a recent post on the Strobist blog, and like most readers of the blog, I've been itching to give the technique a try myself. It's pretty simple, and only a timid first attempt, but I'm pretty chuffed with how it turned out. I think there's great potential for cool, fun photos in the future!
Technical details:
- Remotely triggered 580EX on stand to the right, with barn door on one side to isolate subject from the background.
- Simple desk lamp on the left (my second flash doesn't seem to want to work wirelessly any more).
- 80cm silver reflector on stand at left at head hight.
- With the remotely triggered camera on "bulb" setting, immediately after the flash fired, an assistant turned off the desk lamp.
- I stepped in from out of frame with a red LED torch (set to the dimmest of it's variable settings) and traced Nathan four times with the torch, then for the second version I also did a simple zig-zag around him.
- Once that was done I closed the shutter, and repeated the process four more times for a total of five frames.
- The raws were processed in Lightroom and assembled into an animated gif in Image Ready.
