Last night, after many months of on-and-off work, Naomi completed what I think is one of her most beautiful beaded artworks yet, a green, silver and black beaded feather headpiece.

This piece will be on display in the members showcase at the Bead Society of Victoria Bead Expo, on this weekend in the Kingston City Hall, Moorabbin. If you go, make sure you say hi to Naomi, who will be running a class on loomed beading, and volunteering at the BSV stand.
To take this photo, I simply laid the headpiece on a sheet of white card, and bounced a single flash off our white ceiling. The flash was placed at camera top right. I turned the flash power up to full, so that I could stop down the aperture a bit to get as big a depth of field as possible. I believe I was shooting at f16 or so.

It’s been too long, but I’m back baby! And to make up for my absence, here’s some photos of some jewellery I’ve taken recently for Naomi as illustrations to be used in the next BSV newsletter.

I won’t go into details explaining my recent absence from the blog, but those who follow regularly might be able to guess. Real life just takes its toll after a while, and sometimes things just become “too hard”. Although I didn’t plan it as such, the last three weeks became kind of a holiday from the blog, one that was much needed, I think.
Just as an aside: I’m writing this post while listening to One Slip by Pink Floyd. An awesome song played loud! :)
There’s been a few bits of news since I last wrote:
- I am now officially (but yet to be signed on) an official “Staff Photographer” for the upcoming Melbourne Anime Festival (Manifest). I have a long history with the convention, and you’ve seen some of the photos I’ve taken there before ( 2007 Friday, 2007 Saturday, 2007 Sunday). This year, the arrangement has been formalised, and along with one or two other photographers, I’ll have more access than ever before, so you can look forward to the best coverage of Manifest ever!
- Still in negotiation but very close to being finalised, this year in addition to being a staff photographer at Manifest, I will also have a dedicated photo area with a backdrop and professional lighting, where anyone can come and have their photo taken, and optionally buy prints of the photos. I’ll have more information soon, but if you are attending, look forward to being able get high quality professional photographic prints of yourselves and your awesome costumes!
- In related news, I’ve finally partially restored my photo gallery, which went offline when I changed hosts. I’ve installed the gallery software again and have been uploading photos from my collection. So far I have all the photos I’ve taken at official Manifest events since 2004, plus a handfull of Manifest social meets. I’ll have many many more photos to go here over time, including my holidays and shoots with friends, so keep an eye on it. You can also comment on and tag photos, as well as subscribe to the gallery to be notified of updates.
- Despite my neglect for the last couple of weeks, the blog continues to do well, climbing from 77 to 65 in the Top 100 Australian blogs list! Thank you to everyone for helping make the blog a continued success!
That’s all for now, but look forward to more as I get back to a more regular posting frequency.
Thanks for sticking around. ;)

These are some of the first photos using my brand new, 60cm, collapsable light tent. I’m very happy with it, as it gives a lovely soft even light. The cloth sweep however, easily wrinkles and shows texture in close-up shots. I think I might have to find a large sheet of paper, put some velcro dots on it and use that instead. Photos below, plus a surprise bonus…

The last photo above is the first portrait photo taken in the new studio! It was a 30 second job as I was showing our friend Anna the studio. Chibi (the cat) wandered in and Anna picked him up for a hug. I told her to hold him for the camera while I switched on the flashes and turned them at the walls, as the umbrellas weren’t mounted. It’s not an ideal shot, but I’m very happy with the soft lighting :)

This is a cute sequined cap that Naomi bought a while back for a hat theme party.
We’re selling it on ebay right now if it looks like your kind of thing!
