Last night, after many months of on-and-off work, Naomi completed what I think is one of her most beautiful beaded artworks yet, a green, silver and black beaded feather headpiece.

This piece will be on display in the members showcase at the Bead Society of Victoria Bead Expo, on this weekend in the Kingston City Hall, Moorabbin. If you go, make sure you say hi to Naomi, who will be running a class on loomed beading, and volunteering at the BSV stand.
To take this photo, I simply laid the headpiece on a sheet of white card, and bounced a single flash off our white ceiling. The flash was placed at camera top right. I turned the flash power up to full, so that I could stop down the aperture a bit to get as big a depth of field as possible. I believe I was shooting at f16 or so.

Recently, with the help of Naomi, I combed through all of my photos to pick the very best to put in an online folio. Some of the digging went pretty deep, and I had to upload a few of my older photos to Flickr. So here’s a real potpourri of some of my older photos, with the descriptions I used on Flickr. I hope you enjoy!

There was a capacity crowd of 80,000 people at the MCG in 2006, to watch Jana Pitman win gold in the 400m at the Commonwealth Games. I’ll probably never see that many people at once again! 16 photos, handheld vertically, with Canon 350D at 18mm. Stitched in PTGui into a blended photoshop file with layers preserved, then edited in photoshop to fix up people who moved between exposures.

Model Asham, with a fisheye. It was a lot of work extracting her from the background, but the angle, expression and foreshortening effect of the fisheye made it worth it. I think the result is both glamorous and humorous.

I found this in a quiet spot in a little creek near our place one day while walking. It’s nice what little examples of beauty you can find when you keep your eyes open.

Lightning is quite difficult to capture, mostly because it requires a great deal of luck. I took about 40 or so photos and this is the only one I managed to catch a strike in the frame. I’m relieved that it was quite a good strike, and a lot of nice detail shows up, including lots of little filaments. The colour you see here is false, since the camera has no idea how to set colour balance for such a shot. In the processing I chose the green channel only, since the image is essentially monochromatic, and gave the picture a blue hue, to simulate how we perceive lightning strikes with the naked eye.
If you’re interested, here’s a screenshot of the rain radar for my area at the time of the photo. I live between Caulfield and Springvale, just below and to the right of centre.

A Rainbow Lorikeet taken in the backyard of my Aunt and Uncle. They have a number of bird feeders around their house and attract a wide variety of avian life, including these beautiful birds.
