The second night of the workshop I stayed up late to watch the moon rise. The colours were spectacular as the waning crescent moon illuminated the misty waters of Lake Eppalock.

It’s time again for the Night Sky Photography workshop (philhart.com/workshops), so for the next three days I’m under dark skies taking photos.
This one is a 70 minute single exposure star trail.

This shot was taken to test the HDR capabilities of my new Canon G15. Note, this isn’t with the built-in HDR mode, as that only creates a jpeg file. I want a RAW output, so I took an autoexposure bracketed sequence. I was in a bit of a hurry so I didn’t look up the menu settings for AEB and shot with the default three photos/2 stop steps. I’d prefer a wider range for HDR I think, so I’ll need to look into that! Still happy with the results from a compact :)

Taken just after midnight, this is an 8 shot vertical panorama of the Milky Way from 45 degrees down looking at the reflection in the lake to directly overhead. And I think this may be my first aurora photo ever! See the faint red glow above the horizon? Each shot was: 30sec f1.4 ISO3200
