This is my niece Amy. I took this photo in a very dark corner of the house, with some nice soft light coming through small windows on an overcast day. Somehow I had the shutter speed set to 1/640 sec, so the camera went way up to 12800ISO. Due to the excellent noise handling of Lightroom 5 however, the photo is more than good enough to share!

A portrait of friend Sare. The setup for the photo was as follows: Folding black backdrop behind. One Einstein 640 at half power with 7" reflector directly behind the models (you can see it in one of the photos). One Einstein 640 also at half power with a 60" softbox camera left (see the reflection in the eyes). Fill was provided by the two lights bouncing off nearby walls.

Creative Video – Sushi Conveyor

I found this brilliant video online today at http://dannychoo.com. I think it brilliantly shows how you can do interesting, creative photography and video with simple camera equipment. Just try and watch this one without smiling!

I don’t know what camera was used, but just about any camera available today would have done the job. From what I understand, the girl asked for permission before she sent her camera on the trip around the sushi restaurant on the conveyor belt. I suppose she was lucky that the camera returned to her, but the results she got were not only amusing, but also incredibly interesting. The diversity of faces, the different reactions, the slice of life shown are exactly the kind of things that make for great photography.

So what simple, clever ideas can you come up with to get creative with photography?

Sailor Moon Photo Shoot with Jodie

A Sailor Moon costume photoshoot was planned on the Manifest forums for quite a while, but everyone soon started dropping out. In the end, only Jodie was able to make it, but we were still keen to go ahead. Fortunately Jodie is a fantastic cosplayer and good friend, and together with Nakey (Mark) as another photographer, the three of us had a lot of fun shooting photos in a local park on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Jodie looked gorgeous, don’t you think?

The shoot was great fun, and we really enjoyed all the bemused, amused and amazed views from the others in the park of all ages. The childrens’ reactions were especially entertaining, and some of the parents were even overheard to say “I used to watch that show!”

The clear sky and time of day we were shooting resulted in very contrasty light, so most of the photos you see here were assisted by using off camera flash, in the strobist style. I’ve included exposure details and strobist information under each photo below.

Trip to the Hills – Day 3: Snow!

Continuing on from last month’s series of posts about our weekend trip to the Victorian highlands, here’s day three, the long-awaited trip to the snow!

This was the first time my nieces had seen snow (and only about the 5th for me!), and naturally making a snowman and tobogganing were essential activities. The responsibility of ensuring the girls had as much fun possible on the slopes fell to my father and I. I think we enjoyed ourselves at least as much as my nieces, but we had nowhere near the energy they did :)
