It’s been one of those days.

This morning our aquarium “crashed”: for some unknown reason, most of the things in our tank died and fouled the tank, putting at risk the rest of the things in our tank.
This afternoon, while on a mission to get an extra filter for the tank, I had a car accident. An elderly female driver entered from a side-street, apparently not seeing me. I was travelling at the legal speed limit, and managed to slow down quite a bit before I hit. It felt like a very hard hit, and both cars were write-offs, but fortunately our injuries were minor.
I was taken to the hospital to be checked out, and was discharged an hour or two later. I’ve got a bumped knee, sore ribs from the seat belt, and a stiff and sore centre and left neck. The doctors said there didn’t seem to be any serious issues, but I can expect to be stiff and sore for the next week or so.
As for the fish tank? We’ve done all we can for now to try and salvage whatever we can, and all we can do now is wait and see. I’m not too hopefull, but sometimes nature can surprise you with how resilliant it is.
I hope to post again soon, especially to get the August project going. I’ll have to wait and see how I feel tomorrow. For now, I’m just going to take it easy. Thank you for your patience!

These gorgeous corals and tropical fish are in the home aquarium of Mike, a member of the Marine Aquarium Society of Victoria (aka MASOV). The monthly meeting was held at his place this Tuesday, so I had a lot of fun taking many photos of his beautiful tank.

These hideous creatures are a huge pest in our marine aquarium. They are called flatworms and they have overrun our tank.

They must have come in to our tank from a bought coral, and found the conditions to their liking. They are in huge numbers, and any exposed surface is about 30% covered by them. On three seperate occasions we’ve poisoned them and syphoned out all that we could see, but within a month they’re back to the same population level. We hate them, they make the tank ugly and we have no idea how to get rid of them… :(
Time lapse coral and clown fish – P365 Jul31

For this time lapse, I learned my lesson from last time, and chose a more interesting subject. Here we have a short time lapse of our two little clown fish frolicking in the head of a xenia coral. This was one frame every five seconds this time, and it really makes them look like they’re zipping all over the place!
Some lessons learned this time:
- Don’t do time lapse in vertical orientation. Video sites will shrink the video to fit a horizontal orientation, making the video look small and ugly.
- While the clown fish are cute, they move around too fast to be good time lapse subjects.
- When shooting by AC light, don’t set the shutter speed to be too fast. The power cycle of AC makes lights fade in and out many times a second. Too fast for the eye to see, but slow enough that a camera on 1/200th sec may not expose enough light, resulting in flickering in the final time lapse.
I hope you like this one!
